Thanks to Goody10, I've been appointed the UTFiles Site Manager. I've been a long-time fan of the UT series, and as such am extremely happy about this new job. It's also my first time working for FileFront.
My real name is Richard, and I'm a student in Ireland. As I'm sure you can tell already, I'm also not much for small talk.
I look forward to adding and reviewing more content to this already excellent site. Start sending in your files, new items, and PotDs!
All I can now say is: "Play. You are on red." | | |

Who cares, PUT IT IN!!
I surely miss it. Epic made an epic mistake taking that mode out as well as most of the modes unique to UT. Invasion is one I loved as well and it's gone.
The results of this poll should probably go to Epic or at least be posted in Beyond Unreal (or every-known large Unreal forum).

| | UT3Files Staff Positions Open - Site News Posted by: Mikouen on 06-14-2009 @ 09:24 | | | This News Item has been viewed 11611 times! | Unreal Tournament 3 News | Heyhey ladies and gentlemen,
So let's get real here. This site is slumping. And why is this site slumping? Because it's not getting enough TLC!
We of the FileFront Network are looking for driven individuals with a passion for the Unreal games, community and mods, who have the free time to volunteer to rebuilding and improving this site. Whether you prefer to be looking through the scope of a lightning gun or an UnrealEd viewport is irrelevant - if you know your UT stuff, you're just what we need!
Before I list the open staff positions, I should first mention our basic requirements for all staff.
- Firstly, we require any applicants to be over the age of 13 - this is for legal reasons, namely the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, which forbids us from collecting private data on under 13s.
- Secondly - boy is this one ever obvious
- applicants need to own at least one of the games the site supports (preferably legally). We're focused mostly on the UT games, so ideally we'll need staff that have either of the 200x games and either UT or UT3, but if you have Unreal and/or Unreal 2 that would be a bonus.
- Third, since we are an American network, a good grasp on the English language is very much preferred.
- Fourth, an understanding of the games and community dynamic is necessary. A moderate understanding of how mods work is also preferable.
- Finally - you'll need enough free time to do this! Seriously. If you think working on the site might conflict with school, or work, then please - focus on real life. It's more important. Really, it is!
Hokay, so with that said, let's list the job slots!
------------------------------------------------------------------
File Reviewers (x2)
Job Summary:
The duties of a file reviewer are to download and playtest submitted files, write a reasonable review of playtested files, and ensure that they are validated onto the site within a reasonable timeframe. Reviews should assess submitted mods keeping both the modding and gameplay sides in focus.
Additional Notes:
An understanding of how UT mods work is preferable, as it enables the reviewer to offer more engine-specific feedback. Naturally a good writing style is beneficial, since the best kind of reviews are ones that educate and entertain.
------------------------------------------------------------------
News Reporters (x2)
Job Summary:
The role of the news reporter is to actively seek out any interesting subjects or events from within the community, do a write-up on the subject, and post it to the site. The news reporter is also responsible for editing and validating news submitted to the site.
Additional Notes:
Due to the journalistic nature of this role, good instincts and in-depth knowledge of the wider community dynamics is almost vital. Some knowledge of HTML formatting would be beneficial but not required, as it's the content rather than the presentation we're really focused on.
------------------------------------------------------------------
How To Apply
Since the staff application forms are 404'd for the time being, we're going to have to improvise here.
As an intermediary measure, you can send me an email via the on-site mailform by clicking here.
Details on how to send this email, information to include:
Subject - Please fill out the subject of the email as "UT3Files Staff Application". Thanks!
Site Username - Your username on the site.
Real Name - Self-explanatory.
Date Of Birth - When you were born.
Desired Role - What job it is you're applying for.
Why Volunteer - Why it is you want this role, and why you think you're right for it.
About You - Just tell us a little bit about yourself, helps us get a grip on what kind of person you are.
Timezone / City - List your timezone, so we know about your availability. If you're unsure of your timezone, instead list the city in which you reside and I can figure that out myself.
Contact Details - Please also supply any instant messenger details you have, so that I can get in touch with you.
Interested? I sure hope so!
Apply To Volunteer!
Hope to hear from you soon.

This weekend, the emphasis is once more on the recently released Unreal Tournament 3 Black, giving gamers everywhere the chance to play UT3, for free, for a five day period.
To get access to this event, all one needs to do is download Steam, register an account, login and preload the game. Free gameplay begins at 10am PST on May 28th 2009.
For those who don't own a copy of UT3 this is a perfect chance to size the entire game up, and see if it makes your shopping list!
Note that if you have a retail UT3 product key, this can be used for product activation within Steam, effectively allowing access to both the retail and Steam releases of the game. Useful if you happen to "misplace" your DVD, or if you have a bunch of Steam junkie friends. (Editor's Note: I'm looking at you guys, OniLink, book and Lulolwen.) | | |

| | Have files awaiting validation? // Note regarding Server-2-Server transfers. - Site News Posted by: Mikouen on 04-06-2009 @ 14:59 | | | This News Item has been viewed 12548 times! | Unreal Tournament 2004 News | 1. Status on files awaiting validation.
We have a backlog of thirty plus files which were awaiting validation on Sunday. Unfortunately, processing of these files is not possible due to an FTP problem which is currently being looked into. While we cannot give an ETA on these fixes, we can say with certainty that the problem only involves file submissions which reach the age of seven days.
Any file authors who had files in the waiting list over this age should have received an email from the site with a small note explaining that we cannot process the file(s) due to this error. (Please check your emails spam folder if you cannot see it, as we have had reports of the emails sometimes being shifted into spam.)
If you have received one of these emails, we humbly request that you re-submit the file to get around this FTP error, and we will work on having the files processed as quickly as possible.
2. Note regarding Server-2-Server transfers.
S2S transfers still seem to be a popular upload method, since they allow mirroring of files from one location to another. However, some users of this method provide links to download pages, which really doesn't work out since the moment we process the transfer, all we get on our end is a copy of the download page's .html file.
Please note that Server-2-Server transfers require a direct link to the file itself (for example: http://www.google.com/file.zip) in order to function correctly. As such, at this time S2S transfers cannot support indirect http download services such as FileFront.com (ironically). While this may change in the future as aspects of the network are altered/upgraded, for the forseeable future only direct URL links to the file itself can be provided for S2S transfers.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. | | |
| | It's been an 'Unreal' two weeks! - Site News Posted by: Mikouen on 04-04-2009 @ 18:12 | | | This News Item has been viewed 12334 times! | Unreal Tournament 2003 News | (Sorry for the terrible pun.)
Greetings one and all,
Well, you probably have a lot of questions. No doubt you also have a lot of expletives, but let's save those for the time being, eh?
Let's see if I can't address some of the things you're likely wondering about.
* Wait, who the heck are you, monkey-boy?
My name's Mike, and I'm the sheriff in this 'ere town. (Always wanted to use that line.) Some of you may remember when a little turd named Kouen got the site manager role on here back in.... well, some time ago. He popped in with loads of ideas in his head about how to get this ship sailing smooth again, opened up some staff applications.... and none of you selfish whelps wanted to help. Meanies! Well, I am he and he is me.
Along with Killer Kyle, I'm gonna be pulling the same tricks again, and we're hopefully going to get this show on the road, mirroring some of the other network sites in terms of quality. Examples such as KotORFiles and EFFiles spring to mind. (Sorry Crazy Assassin, JKFiles doesn't spring to mind. You need more British people on staff! )
* What the flamin' hell was that closure stuff about? Was it all just a joke after all?
That closure stuff was about Ziff Davis Media choosing to liquidate FileFront. No, it was never a joke. Allow me to elaborate.
Prior to March 24th 2009, someone at Ziff Davis Media, wanting to cook the books, expressed an intention of closing down FileFront. There was no mention of this to FileFront employees until the last minute, and not even a whisper to the FileFront volunteer staff until after operations had been suspended.
Many still think the April 1st timing is a bit too much of a coincidence for this not to be a joke. They're half right. FileFront closing around to April 1st likely is not a coincidence; however, FileFront closing around April Fools Day is a coincidence. April 1st is April Fools Day, true, however it is also the start of the third quarter of America's fiscal year.
The prominence of April 1st in the US business year makes the 'convenient' timing of the closure much more understandable outside of the prankster's mindset.
* So why is the site still here?
Well, it's funny you should ask that. At the start, there was FilesNetwork. Then there was this little company called I/O Error Development, which created a file mirroring service named FileFront. In 2004, FileFront purchased FilesNetwork, and in late 2005, FileFront was purchased by Ziff Davis Media. In 2009, Ziff Davis Media moved to liquidate FileFront.
FileFront survived because this was averted. Another group purchased FileFront from Ziff Davis Media. That group is.... FileFront. Yeah. Try and work that one out.
Long story cut short, FileFront is now in the possession of it's original founders once more, and thus is now an independent privately-owned entity.
* You sure that's not just an excuse? Whole thing seems like a fishy joke and this is the chicken-out.
I don't find a dozen people being unemployed and £500 in incurred bandwidth bills during the backup operation to be a very funny joke, and I assure you Ziff Davis Media wouldn't either if this had been a prank - they'd have been tribunalled to hell and back.
Fortunately you'll notice that staff are no longer required to wear legal disclaimers in their forum signatures, and also that Ziff Davis Media copyrights have been removed from the forums and main site. These disclaimers still remain on the network sites, however they will likely be removed with the redesign planned by our Network Manager, n0e.
* So does FileFront support download managers now?
FlashGet bent.
* What's next for UT3Files?
The whole network is currently regrouping. There are still problems to fix, and fallout from the seperation to be cleaned up. Several elements of the system are still out of action, such as PotDs and quite a few backend functions. These will be fixed in due course.
While this is occuring, there will also be deliberation over changing UT3Files' day-to-day operations, as well as expanding the scope of the site with new features, rounding off unfinished initiatives, and generally just kicking this site into the 21st Century and away from it's status as a "glorified FTP server".
More news items will be posted on this as progress is made.
During this recovery period, I think I speak for everyone at the network when I say that we appreciate your patience and understanding.
Thanks!
- Michael "Mikouen" Harris

I voted Deathmatch. Specifically though, it's Team Deathmatch that I prefer.

The Reliquary has now added warfare powernode objective support to their Bombing Run modification for UT3. This will enable mappers to do all sorts of unique and cool things in BR. For example, you could have goal defense nodes for each team, create node locations for team based vehicle spawns, orb access controls, etc...
Sounds very promising !
People play Bombing Run? I never played it once. Wonder why?
