We got a chance to check out a brief demo of Unreal Tournament 2007 at last night's Midway event, with members of Epic walking us through some of the game's features. Although the game will also be appearing on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the game was demoed on a high-end PC. The demo kicked off with Epic's Mark Rein telling the audience that what we'd be seeing was still very early, although the first level we saw looked excellent.
Rein mentioned that working primarily in a sci-fi environment was liberating in a number of ways, but it could be alienating for some players. It was for this reason that the team at Epic has always tried to keep their games grounded in reality, even when they are set on a far-off, made-up planet. We then got a tour of a robot factory on Liandri, where a number of conveyor belts and floating platforms actually impact the gameplay on the level. They also showed us the level of detail on the metal walls and floors, which they had "grungified" by adding dirt and scuff marks.

Beyond the feel of the maps is the look of the maps. Apparently the guys at Epic really hate bland or repeated textures. Again, they're trying to steer clear of gaminess, this time by applying what they call "grungification." Virtually every surface gets grunged up so that the level doesn't look like it just popped out of a carwash. It feels like a place that other people have used before you. And there's also the look and feel of the weapons, which have all apparently been redesigned visually to incorporate moving parts, particularly the tri-barrel Rocket Launcher, which will show each rocket getting loaded into the tubes as you fire them off, rather than rotating and locking like in previous incarnations of UT. We didn't get an official list, but it sounds as though the arsenal won't see any huge alterations from UT2004.
And there's also a few new vehicles they haven't talked about before. First is the Paladin, which is a defensive weapon that's also useful as an escort. Its key feature is a shield projected about ten feet in front of it, which can be rotated to block fire from multiple directions. It has a cool purple glow that's reflected onto the vehicle and ground. Another vehicle is the SPMA, a long-range artillery cannon that can strike targets beyond visual range. Last is the Cicada, visually similar to the Manta but capable of sustained flight like the Raptor. They describe it as a close support vehicle, and it can lock onto a target while you load up a bunch of missiles. The target can eventually be completely out of your view, but the missiles will still track their way over to it, as long as you've locked on beforehand.

But enough about the new graphics--how's this thing going to play? It's been previously revealed that UT 2004's popular onslaught mode will make a return in UT2K7, though details beyond that have been sparse. Morris showed off three new vehicles that'll be featured in the upcoming game that ought to shift the balance in heated onslaught matches. The paladin is a new armored ground vehicle that's used primarily for escort and defense. Though you'll have a basic energy weapon on the paladin's turret, the vehicle's most important feature is a deployable energy shield that will absorb enemy fire, and you can rotate it around in real time along with the turret.
We also got to take a look at a new version of the SPMA (affectionately referred to as the SPAM), which UT veterans will know is able to deliver artillery fire far outside its visual range. You'll be able to deploy an aerial camera that will give you a bird's-eye view of the area you're trying to target, but the big difference in UT2K7 is that you'll be able to use the mouse to fine-tune your aiming for precision strikes (previously, you had to aim somewhat clumsily with the arrow keys). Finally, Morris said the team wants to emphasize aerial combat in the next version of onslaught, so he showed us the cicada, a new flyer that's intended for ground assault. This fairly quick vehicle has a cluster missile attack of sorts that lets you lock onto a target and then hit that target, even if you fire your rockets while facing the other direction.

I think he means that we have seen all of these vehicles before in UT2k4... they are
obviously tweaked in UT2k7, but nowhere near anything new. Surely there is at least
something new with 18 vehicles, though... we'll just have to see.
